Seahorse Featrue Title

Few people realise that some pipefish are also found in freshwater in Brazil, Angola, Camaroun, India and Indonesia. With its 40cm, Doryichthys boaja from Thailand is the largest pipefish of all. The males of the majority of freshwater species carry their eggs in an open channel. Enneacampus ansorgii however has a brood pouch as in seahorses. Two males will vie for rank by swimming a par de deux with their bodies held in an S-shape. During the dance, their bodies are bright red with shimmering blue checkers along their sides. More....

Seahorses and pipefish for the most part, spend most of their lives in a reef. In Ghost Pipefish, the female has the brood pouch from which the tiny larvae are released into the plankton. When they settle out onto a reef, they are several centimeters with only poorly developed webbing between the fin rays. Most species are seen typically as pairs, though the Ornate Ghost Pipefish aggregates with up to 6 individuals on a small coral outcrop.
